Wildlife Rescue and Emergency Response

WIRES is the largest wildlife rescue organisation in Australia and receives over 215,000 calls and assists over 148,000 native animals annually.

Helping native animals in distress

WIRES Wildlife Rescue Office operates 24/7 providing rescue advice and assistance for sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife. If you have found a native animal in need of help, fill in our report a rescue form or call 1300 094 737.

Emergency Advice

Read this Emergency Rescue Advice for advice related to specific wildlife rescues, to find out what you can do to safely assist. Additional resources to help wildlife impacted by major emergency events include:

  • WIRES Bushfire Factsheet for Wildlife
  • WIRES Floods & Storms Advice for Wildlife
  • WIRES Extreme Heat Advice for Wildlife

Emergency Response Team

WIRES has a dedicated Emergency Response Team operating across 3 states, providing full-time wildlife rescue assistance, and emergency response for wildlife during major disasters.

National Emergency Response

In addition to the support provided by WIRES Wildlife Rescue Office and Emergency Response Team, WIRES provides the national wildlife rescue sector ongoing systems access and support to improve speed of rescue response, and access to Disaster Relief for immediate wildlife aid during major emergencies.

Emergency Updates

You will find information about emergencies in our WIRES News section.

Our Wildlife Rescue Office

The WIRES Wildlife Rescue Office (WRO) serves as our central communication hub, providing crucial assistance to distressed native animals around the clock, every day of the year.

Annually, we communicate with over 215,000 callers to share critical wildlife information and promote harmonious co-existence between communities and wildlife in urban, regional, and rural environments. Leveraging digital efficiencies through our rescue communications platform xMatters, in partnership with Everbridge, allows our WRO to extend its support nationwide, connecting callers with WIRES volunteers and other wildlife rescue organisations to assist more wildlife in critical need.
